I really believe that fate is what brought me to Flow. Pursuing YTT was something that I had wanted to do for a long time. But I had so much self-doubt and feelings of not being a good enough yogi to be a teacher and not being worthy of taking the seat of the teacher. I had reached a point in my life where I felt very stuck, unhappy, unsatisfied and alone. I needed to get away from Atlanta and I needed to change my life. Which I did, with a simple Google search. I don’t remember the exact words that I searched but they were pretty much: “Flow” “Community” “Service” “Empower” “Nourish” “Uplift” and, of course, “Yoga.” Flow Yoga Center was the first thing to pop up. I clicked on it and in my heart I just felt a resounding, “Yes!” I knew that there would be lots of details to work out - money, travel, lodging, time off of work, etc - but I just told myself that it would all work out if I just took the leap. So I did! I registered for the 200 Hour YTT and it was the best decision that I’ve ever made.. Flow didn’t just change me, but expanded my life and lifted me up in ways that I never thought were possible.

I completed teacher training at Flow Yoga Center last fall. At the time, I was practicing at a number of different studios in the DC area – all of which had teacher training programs. But I was concerned about the programs they offered were too big and overall, they had an impersonal, “revolving door” feel.

I found Flow while researching teacher training programs and felt at home from the first information session. Deb and Cath were incredibly warm, informative and welcoming of any and all questions. I also felt a vested interest in us as individuals – why we were interested in a teacher training program and what we were hoping to get out of it – so we could mutually ensure it would be a good fit for both of us.

I wanted my yoga teacher training to be a special, transformative experience and Flow’s program lived up to my expectations on every level. I was impressed with the comprehensive nature of the program from studying all eight limbs of yoga to various asana traditions which have greatly expanded not only my physical practice but my approach to life. Deb and Cath are wonderful teachers who made us feel supported and challenged throughout our program. I felt encouraged to find my own voice as a teacher which has served me greatly as I continue to grow my teaching offerings. I stay in touch with many of my fellow teacher training friends and frequently come back to Flow for classes; I believe Flow has some of the best teachers in the city and it always feels like coming home.

After moving around a lot and practicing yoga for over ten years, I finally found myself in one place long enough to commit to a yoga teacher training, and I’m so happy I choose Flow. As a foreign service officer, I was inspired to join Flow’s YTT program so I could solidify a regular practice to take with me abroad, and so I could have the skills to create a community around yoga as I move to new countries for work. My YTT was more than I could have ever expected. The teacher training made me feel grounded despite my transient lifestyle, and it gave me the precious space to be introspective about my practice. Now nearly a year after my YTT began, I’m teaching at a gym, a community center, and at my work. Deciding to sign up for Flow’s YTT was one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever given myself.

I spent a lot of time researching where to take yoga teacher training and am above and beyond happy and satisfied with Flow’s program. The studio itself is warm and welcoming. The teachers that run the program are knowledgeable, experienced and supportive. It’s the most non-judgemental, fun and accepting environment; no matter your yoga skill level or experience. The best part was that we touched on so many types and styles of yoga and there was a perfect balance between physical practice, philosophy, spirituality, anatomy and more. The teachers and training group were always available for questions and extra help. Flow Yoga Center’s YTT was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and it truly changed my life! I left the training well-rounded, confident and ready to conquer the world!

“My first yoga teacher training was at Flow and was such an inspiring experience. I loved the multitude of teachers and modalities we explored and the focus of turning to your own practice to teach from. It is still my favorite teacher training experience and very much set the ground for teacher I’ve become over the past nine years.”

Yoga allows you to be unapologetically yourself. As a child, I always favored collaboration over competition. I played softball well enough, basketball well enough, ran track well enough; but my heart wanted everyone to win. I found yoga when I was a senior in college. Introduced by way of Kripalu, I quickly found the benefits that a personal yoga practice could bring to my wellbeing and self-awareness. I yearned to find depth in my meditations, spaciousness in my asanas, and heightened senses brought on by quieting my mind.
My yoga practice came with me as I moved through multiple cities and countries. It brought me grounding and a sacred space on which to gather myself. I learned that, like the moon, my practice would always be present and available regardless of my geographic position in space.

After wandering the globe I settled into life in DC and decided it was time to learn how to teach others what I had been practicing for the past decade and to guide students through mindful experiences. I sought out the opinion of many teachers- past and present- all of whom pointed me to Flow.

Walking into each session was like being greeted by a warm hug- an embrace by the community we created that has lasted to this very day. I live my life in a different mindset; I have an incredible bond with my co-trainees as we now venture through this new-found life experience post-training together; and the challenges of the past feel less cumbersome. I appreciate life more deeply.

Flow’s teacher training taught me to acknowledge and listen to the lessons all around me. I am now teaching yoga in DC and the other evening my husband provided one of these unexpected lessons. “You are nervous about teaching class tomorrow, aren’t you? Embrace that feeling of nervousness, soon enough it will be gone, teaching will feel routine. Enjoy this fleeting moment now.”

Now that I’m a teacher, I savor each moment that I am able to lead students through their personal experiences of growth. I, in turn, learn and expand. Everyone wins.

Flow’s 200-hour teacher training was a transformative experience — a friendly environment where I was supported, challenged, and encouraged to explore and find my own voice. I immersed myself in all the program had to offer and emerged with a well-rounded foundation for my ongoing yogic education that has sparked a lifelong passion for study, practice, and teaching. I am so grateful!

One of my favorite elements of the Flow’s teacher training program is the variety of experiences it offer prospective teachers. From Ashtanga to Jivamukti, classical Hatha Yoga to the revolutionary Prana Flow, students have the opportunity to taste various styles and then incorporate these principles into a unique and evolutionary approach to their own study of yoga. This all culminates in an ignited expression of teaching that is based on continual learning - it doesn’t get better than that.

Teacher training at Flow was truly transformational - it transformed not just my yoga study but the direction of my life! The training is completely comprehensive, covering everything from yoga philosophy to flowing vinyasa, sequencing to sanskrit, anatomy to assisting. The guest teachers are full of knowledge and experience, giving the training a rich fullness and providing each trainee with a rare and unique experience. It prepared me to be the teacher and leader that I am today and i am eternally grateful to Debra and all the teachers at Flow.

As I sit here finishing up my assignments, i have to pause and recommend this amazing training I just went through. In my opinion, no other studio in the dmv area even comes close to what Flow Yoga Center has to offer (and trust me i’ve made my rounds). Now imagine being trained by flows best teachers. Every guest teacher that comes in is like the mvp of the workshop they are teaching.
Even after the training, as I deepen my own practice, and start to teach, I feel so much support from my teachers Brittanie , Cory, and Debra Perlson. They have so many students who admire them, but they always make time to answer my millions of questions and ask how I am doing. Whether you want to teach, or just learn more about yoga, I cannot recommend this enough. I loved every single hour of it, it changed my world, and I just wish I could do it all over again.

Just taking a moment to encourage any of my yogi friends (and friends of friends, please share!) to consider Flow’s teacher training program this fall. As many of you know, I completed it this June after years of contemplation (and a bit of fear) and can attest to it being one of the best programs out there. Yes, it is 200 hours. Yes, it is challenging, intense, and demanding, both physically and emotionally. But it is without a doubt one of the best and most transformative experiences of my life and has brought me so many new experiences and dear friends, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Debra Perlson Mishalove, Brittanie DeChino, Cory Bryant, and Catherine Zack are among the most gifted, supportive, and inspiring teachers I have ever had and truly teach all eight limbs of yoga by example every day. I am more than happy to answer any questions about my experience—please don’t hesitate to send me a message.

This experience CHANGED MY LIFE. Not only did it deepen my yoga practice, but it taught me patience with myself and others, to look at people in a different way, and compassion on a whole new level. The teachers are PHENOMENAL and you will love every second. I didn’t want it to end!

If you are a yoga student and have ever thought about either deepening your own practice or sharing it with others, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I completed this same training over the course of 4 months from Fall 2012-January 2013, and it - quite literally - was life changing. Aside from the variety of disciplines you learn about - from jivamukti to ashtanga to yoga nidra to prana flow - you gain a real foundation in what it means to be ‘in the seat of a teacher’, anatomy, sequencing, assists, the philosophical underpinnings and history of the practice, and really strengthen your own understanding of poses and how they feel in your own body. I’ve been struggling ever since to decide which advanced training to do to reach my 500 hour, and with such a good experience as my base, it’s a hard decision to make!
Perhaps, though, the best part is the people. Going through a training like this is pure personal development. It’s raw, it’s real, and some of the fellow students - and teachers - on the journey with you will be come souls sisters and brothers for life.
